Now is the time of year when I get a lot of inquiries about custom bridal items, and I love my clients! They aren’t looking for the run-of-the-mill stuff. My brides tend to be independent women, with a funky sense of style. Some are getting hitched for the second time, or getting married later in life. They appreciate tradition, but they also have a sense of humor, their own style, and often they want to incorporate their own personality into the wedding attire.

This applies to the wedding gown, as well as the intimate apparel. At Sweet Revenge, we do garters, thongs, panties, corsets and negligees! Size doesn’t matter: it’s custom designed as well as custom fit. For small items like garters or thongs, you can specify color, size and fabric type and I can set you up with something fun. Polka Girl Panty

There are two schools of thought on underwear, panties in particular. One is that your underwear should be as invisible as possible, no panty lines, bra straps, slip hem, nothing showing, anonymous, no, sir, we have no feminine parts under here.

The other school of thought, which I adhere to, is to let it show.  A peek of lace slip doesn’t make me cringe, it makes me smile. I’ve been showing bits of my undergear since I was in high school, why stop now? If my bra strap is going to slither out and wave at the world, which it is, then by god it should be a great color. If my low cut jeans are gonna ride down, then at least my undies should be cute and funny. And yes, if I am going to undress in front of a man (mine own), then he should get  a kick out of my panties!

If you want nude, pale pink, or non-descript undies, well–you’ve come to the wrong place. If you want to cheer yourself up every time you pull your pants down to pee, then come here, darling. I have some silly panties for you!

Cherry Surprise in black with the Dot Sleep Mask

I have a fascination with art and hand crafted (well crafted) items. I love to people watch. And, I love a kooky idea that has been developed into something really great…so with that said, when I stumbled across the crafts fair Oddmall: Emporium of the Weird, I was totally intrigued. I had to do it.

I wasn’t sure if what I do is “odd” enough, but as it turns out there is such a wide variety of vendors that yes, though some of them are a little voodoo, a little LARPy, some of them are also just great products. And that’s not to say that I don’t dig a little voodoo! I am definitely going to bring my camera, and geez, if this is not an occasion to really “deck out”, I don’t know what is.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to pack my inventory, and then come up with some creative additions in the short time that I have. Whew. So much fabric, so little time! If you are in Ohio, come join me at Oddmall on May 12, 2012 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center:

In this case, I was traveling with my cohort from Fresh Fettle (clothing stylist for television, music industry and individuals). We had the task of creating a new, “dressy” look for the band Naturally 7, while keeping not only their style as a music group but as individuals intact. Building from Danielle Smith’s concept, we chatted about our options given the extremely short deadline (and lack of access to the guys before the very end). Danielle did some power shopping online and in our area, and we hit the fabric stores hard. Luckily, the concept dictated ALL BLACK, so finding options wasn’t too difficult. As you probably know, finding fabrics and trims in the Indianapolis area is a little limited, though having the addition of the French Seam is nice.

We spent a full day (under the gun) figuring out the game plan: how to modify the purchased garments and how those would work with the rest of the outfits. Then with several days of alterations, I Franken-built (with some help from a dear friend–thanks Beth!)  the new pieces and did as many alterations as we could do before even having tried the clothing on the guys. It was a bit of a leap, though luckily most of them are true to size.

Sunday morning at the crack of dawn we were off to Las Vegas to meet the guys for fittings. (I got patted down, tested for explosives, and had my carry-on hand searched at the Indy airport, and I have to give it to them: they were the most THOROUGH airport.) The band was in Vegas there for the IBM Pulse conference, as the opening show for the conference. We watched them rehearse, and then met with each individually to try the garments on them. Picture: two women with a steady stream of (fine looking) men entering and leaving about a half an hour later. Not that anyone would have noticed–hey, it’s Vegas–but I swear my reputation is intact!  With a little hilarity (super skinny jeans), we got through the fittings and had our work list.

We set up the hotel room, complete with sewing machine and all my sewing tools, including a hammer for riveting (I am now on the terrorist watch list, I am sure of it), an ironing station and a fitting area in the bathroom (the best light). After having been on the go for 20 1/2 hours, we literally crashed in the hotel room at local time 8:30 pm, with our transport the next day at 9:30 am. Not the best showing for a Las Vegas experience, but we HAD been through the travel ringer.

Monday: off to Atlanta, a full day of travel. Tuesday: work day. Danielle’s off and running to three malls, fabric store, etc., and returns with a migraine and we think a cold (coughy neighbor on the airplane). She’s a trooper: we dosed her with Zycam and kept on trucking. I spent the day holed up in the hotel room, sewing, sewing, sewing. Sewing. Eat. Sew. That evening it was back to a stream of guys entering the hotel room for fittings (and I’m pretty sure the front desk did notice this time).

Wednesday: Danielle’s off to do exchanges, shoe shopping. I’m finishing everything, adding trim, closing up linings, last minute details. Then Danielle’s packing everything in garment bags to go on tour to Mexico with Michael Buble, yes, the very next day. She has everything marked, on hangers, packed for each guy so there’s no confusion. By then I am back onto our first costumes, doing a few notes and a couple of repairs. Things look good, despite having traveled all over Europe and then crammed (we think mostly unwashed)  into a huge suitcase for the past week or so. Still lookin’ good, thank goodness! And then, whew, I am done and get a few hours to put my feet up and watch brainless television.

Wednesday 3 am: Danielle’s still going strong, typing emails, prepping for her arrival in Indy where she will go directly to fittings for a tv segment about Prom. I think she MAY have closed her eyes for an hour or so, but come 4:45 we’re on our way to the airport again. Sleepy girls, but victorious! Can’t wait to see them all together on stage, in their “blacks.”

For those of you who aren’t married or in a relationship, Valentine’s Day can be irritating, if not somewhat depressing. But why shouldn’t you also get a little spoiled on Valentine’s Day? Here are a few ideas of things you can do for  a friend, family member or even for yourself to make the day special.

1. Flowers at the office:  Jealous of a co-worker who gets flowers at the office every year? Why don’t you and a friend treat each other to a bouquet with a silly note…it doesn’t have to be roses, so no fear that it will cost you an arm and a leg.  Write an extravagant note, disguise your handwriting, make them wonder who the heck sent it: it all adds to the fun.

2. Spa day: Take off part of the day and get your nails done, have a chair massage, or great haircut.  (If you can’t afford to take the day off of work, some masseuses will even come to the office to do a chair massage, and boy wouldn’t that make your co-workers jealous!)  A  little love to your appearance never hurts your self-esteem.

3. If you’re not into all that fluff, take a class instead and expand your world. A cooking class, craft class or music appreciation class are all treats for your mind and soul.

4. Buy your best friend, daughter, or girlfriend a set of pajamas! Pajamas can be cute, silly, sexy and fun. It’s less risky than buying lingerie (less intimate), easier to guess sizes, and something they will wear a LOT more often. Snuggly as a teddy bear, but useful. They will think of you every time they slip into them.

5. Call up a friend you haven’t heard from in a while. True, your friends who are in relationships may be out to dinner in the evening, but pick up the phone during the day and take the time to reconnect with someone you care about. I know you don’t do it enough! Hearing someone say to you, “It’s so great to hear from you!” may be the thing that really brightens your day.

Recently we had a really great shoot with locals Brian Brosmer (photographer), Kelly Oswalt (makeup artist), and  Elina at the The Fern in Westfield, IN. Westfield, right?  For those of you not from the area, it’s a wee town. However, The Fern is a great remodeled old inn (1901), and the bathroom was just perfect for shooting the Graphic Dots items.

One of the shots reminded me so strongly of Forties’ pin-up art that I mentioned the idea of a calendar…and well, we couldn’t not do it. Our result is a sweet, very slightly naughty and useful twelve month tear-off calendar that we are giving to you free with your order, while supplies last. Enjoy!

Celebrate an anti-couples Valentine’s Day  get-together at your house with your besties! Each person should bring an inexpensive pair of underwear in their own size to decorate. They’ll also bring bits to decorate with: fabric paints, glitter, rhinestones, feathers, yarn, pasta, found objects, bits of fabric, geegaws from their own  crafts stash…the weirder the better. (One of my favorites are googly eyes, because they are easy to glue on, have movement and even make a little noise when there are enough of them.) The host provides glues, sewing supplies, scissors and a space to work.

Share and share alike! You’ll spend the evening having cocktails and snacks, using your dormant creativity to decorate a silly pair of panties to take home with you. Crafting is always more fun with other people, who will inspire you to try new and different things.  As a variation, you can do this as a bridal shower: bring panties in the bride‘s size, and she gets to take the finished panties with her on her honeymoon. It’s a crazy and humorous way for good friends to “be there” on the honeymoon.
